Sin: වත්තේගම vattēgama – Tam: வத்தேகம vattēkama
‘Garden Village’ CP, Sri Lanka.
From Sin: watta, ‘garden, grove’; and gama/gamuwa, ‘village’.
Wattala railway station on the Periyadeniya to Matale line was coveniently located for transporting large amounts of tea and coffee from neighbouring plantations.
And, as Cave (1910) commented, it was also useful for the traveller and tourist:
Near the station a road connects Wattegama with the Panwila road . It is the station for the districts of Panwila , Hunasgiriya , Madulkele , Kelebokka and Knuckles .
