Maharaja Vijayarama Gajapathi Raju-I of the Pusapati dynasty founded Vijayapuri in the 18thC, work which was started during the reign of his father, Maharaja Ananda Raju-I.
It was renamed Vijayanagaram in Vijaya’s own lifetime.
Vizianagram’s iconic 68ft sandstone clock tower was built in 1885 at a cost off Rs.5,400.
