A mythical figure: 99,99,999. Legend says Shiva cursed the sleeping pilgrims and turned them to stone, leaving himself as the “one not counted”.
At Unakoti, hundreds of gigantic rock-cut faces stare out from a forested hillside — India’s closest thing to a Moai/Easter Island landscape. The ten-metre bas-relief of Shiva is the showstopper. Local lore says these were pilgrims turned to stone for failing to wake before sunrise. Whatever the truth, the place has an uncanny, magnetic stillness.
