Udhampur is named after Raja Udham Singh, eldest son of Gulab Singh, the founder of the Dogra dynasty, which since the early 19th century has dominated the area that now constitutes Jammu and Kashmir state.
Udhampur is the Northern Command headquarters of the Indian Army.
Udhampur is a tourist destination in Jammu, known for its scenic beauty and proximity to the Vaishno Devi Temple. three icons — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, all images of Vaishno Devi are worshipped at the temple.
