Mahinda Thera, the son of Emperor Asoka, arrived in Sri Lanka in the 3rdC as a missionary and converted King Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura. Following the visit four major Buddhist monasteries were established, one of which was the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara.
Tissamaharama was the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna in the 3rdC B.C
Tissamaharama is is a popular stopover for Yala National Park and Kataragama.
