Tam: திருவையாறு tiruvaiyāṟu

‘Five Rivers’  Town, Tamil Nadu

From Tam:  tiru, ‘eminent’, ‘prosperous’;  aintu, ‘five’; and āṟu, ’river’.

Thiruvaiyuru sits in the middle of three parallel rivers and their tributaries: Kollidam, Kaveri (+Kudamurutti) and Vennar (+Vatar).

Tyagaraja, the 18-19thC Carnatic vocalist and composer, was born here.
