From Sin: talawwa, ‘meadow, plain’; and kele, ‘jungle’.
Talawakele, 1,198m up in the heart of the Hill Country, has been the HQ of the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka since 1925.
It has undertaken important research into both cultivation and processing, including the introduction of a parisitic wasp in 1940 to see off the Tea Tortrix caterpillar which had been menacing the tea crop.
