Guj: સોમનાથ sōmanātha

 ‘Lord of the Soma’  -Temple,  Gujarat

From Skt: soma, ‘soma plant’; and nath, ‘lord’.

Soma is an unidentified psychoactive plant which was the most important ingredients in ancient Vedic sacrificial rites. Somnath is an epithet of Shiva.

The Somnath Temple is one of Shiva’s twelve sacred  Jyotirlinga shrines. It dayes back to at least the 9thC. The current structure was built in the years after following Independence.
