Asm: শিৱসাগৰ śivasāgara

‘Shiva’s Ocean’  [Sibsagar] City/District,  Assam

From Shiva; and Skt: sāgar, ‘ocean, ‘sea’.

The city gets its name from the big tank/lake in the city centre built in the 1730s by the Ahom queen Phuleswari. The three temples along its banks were dedicated to three Hindu deities: Shivadol- Lord Shiva, Vishnudol- Lord Vishnu, and Devidol- the Goddess Durga.

Sivasagar’s previous name was Rangpur (see above) and it was the Ahom capital during the 18thC.

Sivasagar (a.k.a. Sibsagar) is famous for its tea, oil and Ahom monuments.
