‘Village of Shringi’ [Shringavalli] City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From Shringi and Skt: puri→-auli, ‘village’, ‘settlement’.
The orginal name Shringavalli is associated with the legendary Hindu saint, Shringi, whose exploits are recorded in the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics [with a rare Dra: valli, ‘village’ for somewhere this central and so far east -see Southworth Ch 9; in comparison to the sound shift puri→-auli in the modern name see Growse].
Singrauli was part ot the Rewa estate. It was an isolated and inaccessible region with dense forests and was oftenused as an open prison.
Modern Singauli has earned the sobriquet “Energy Capital of India” on account of its extensive coal and mineral resources and its power plants.
Despite its industrial significance, Singrauli is also home to lush green forests and wildlife, including the nearby Singrauli Wildlife Sanctuary.
