‘City of Shiva’ [Sipri] City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From Shiva and Skt: pur, ‘village’, ‘settlement’.
Shivpuri, formerly Sipri, is an ancient town built in the dense forests of this region. Even today the market is still called Sipri Bazaar.
It was once at the heart of the royal hunting grounds.
It was occupied by Kachhawaha Rajputs up to 1804 when it was taken over by the Scindias who made it their summer capital.
Tantya Tope, a commander of the 1857 Indian Rebellion, was hanged here, and his martyrdom is commemorated by state officials every year
