‘Shyamala Mata’ [Simla, Shyamala]- City, Hill Station, Capital, Himachal Pradesh
Shimla city gets its name from Shyamala Mata, an incarnation of the goddess Kali. The Kali Bari temple is on Bantony Hill.
The state government recently tried to change the name to Shyamal but the locals were opposed to the idea.
The British settled here in 1817 and it became the summer capital of the British Raj 1864-1939.
