‘Town of the Sheikh’ Town/District, Bihar (Bih)

From Urd: sheikh, ‘learned elder’; and Skt: pura, ‘town’.

Sheikhpura developed as a Mughal and post-Mughal settlement, later emerging as a district headquarters. It has connections to Sufi shrines and local centres of learning, its very name signifying a seat of religious prestige.

Today it is a district headquarters between Patna and Munger,part of the historic heartland of Magadh
