From Shah Jahan
The city was founded in the 17th century and was named after Shah Jahan (lit. ‘King of the World), the Mughal Emperor (1628-58), He commissioned the building of the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal (a tomb for his favorite wife/consort, Mumtaz Mahal).
Shah Jahan actually stayed here and liked what he saw enough to order its development from an initially small village site.
