‘Seona Tree’ City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
The Seona or Sewan tree [Gudina arborea] is also known as the goomar teak, Kashmir tree, Malay beechwood, white teak, yamane, or gamhar.
Its wood, sawn and cut into beams and planks, is a useful for building material, for storage crates, and for furniture: cabinets, tables and thrones (the Royal Burmese Lion Throne was made from Sewan wood).
Seoni was founded in 1774 by Mohammed Amin Khan and he built a fort here.
During the fight for Independence police opened fire on tribals participating in a Forest Satyagraha, and many leaders were imprisoned here including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Rudyard Kipling’s Seeonee was the location for his Jungle Book stories [Article – Seeonee: The Site of Mowgli’s Jungle?].
