Sin: සීදුව sīduva – Tam: சீதுவ sītuva
‘Lion Island’ WP, Sri Lanka
From Sin: sinha, ‘lion’; and duwa, ‘island, or ‘part of land surrounded by water’.
Seeduwa may not be an island, strictly speaking, but it is surrounded by the sea, rivers, canals and the Negombo Lagoon, making it an ‘inland’ island.
The ‘lion’ may refer to a king, prince or a dynasty, or may simply be a reference to the shape of its peninsula.
