Tel: సికింద్రాబాద్ sikindrābād
‘Sikander’s City’ [Lashkar, Sikandarabad] City, Telangana
From Sikander, Urd: ābād, ‘city’, ‘village’; and Urd: lash’kar, ‘military camp’; ‘army’.
Secunderabad was founded as a cantonment after the British East India Company defeated Asaf Jah II in 1798.
It was renamed Secunderabad in 1803 after his son, Sikander Asaf Jah III, who succeeded him as Nizam of Hyderabad.
This twin city to Hyderabad, separated by Hussain Sagar lake, was always more cosmopolitan in profile as a result of British influence.
The modern city hosts a number of important companies in the I.T., defence and nuclear energy sectors.
