From Sarang Singh Khichi and Skt: pur, ‘village’, ‘settlement’.
Sarangpur is an ancient site with many Hindu and Jain artefacts.
The town emerged as a prominent trading town in the 13th century and was named after one of its rulers, Sarang Singh Khichi.
It became part of the Dewas princely state by treaty in 1818.
