‘Six Lanes’ [Sahagalli] – City/District, Maharashtra
From Mar: sahā, ‘six’; and Mar: gallī, ‘lane’, ‘alley’.
The city’s original name probably describes the city’s earliest street layout.
The modern District is all sugar, spice and all things nice: it has 28 sugar factories processing 95,287 hectares of sugar cane; it is also known as the ‘Turmeric City’ and produces 13, 000 tonnes of turmeric a year; and it has nearly 50,000 hectares of export-quality grapes under cultivation.
