Hin: सागर sāgara
‘Hundred Forts’ [Saugor] City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From Skt: सागरः sāgara, ‘confluence’, ‘ocean’, ‘sea’.
The name is sometimes conflated with Hin: sau, ‘hundred’ and gaṛh, ‘fort’, but while there are many small forts in the area it is the large lake in the centre of the city that is surely the origin.
The lake was was probably an extension of a natural lake many centuries ago.The lake was originally a source of drinking water but it is too polluted now for that.
