‘Ram Street’ [Nashband] City/District, Jammu & Kashmir
From Ram(a) and Ksh: Band(ar), ‘street’, ‘harbour’; gam, ‘village’
Untill the 1840s this was just a line of houses stanging alongside the right bank of the Chenab river.
But then Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu became the Maharaja of J&K State and Ramban became a staging post on the route for his royal caravans.
Then , under British rule, it became part of the Banihal Cart Road (BCR), linking Jammu with Srinagar,
Today Ramban is strategically located on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
