Raipur is the capital and largest city of Chhattisgarh. It is a major commercial, educational, and industrial hub of central India, known for its steel plants, rice mills, and growing urban infrastructure.
The name Raipur is traditionally linked to Rai Brahma Deo, a 14th-century king of the Ratanpur Kalachuri dynasty, who is believed to have founded the city. The title Rai was commonly used by rulers and landlords in the region, suggesting that the city’s name commemorates a prominent leader. Ratanpur, the former capital, gradually declined in importance as Raipur grew in prominence.
Raipur’s history is deeply tied to the Kalachuri dynasty, which ruled the region from the 9th to 18th centuries. The area was later controlled by the Marathas in the 18th century before coming under British rule. During British India, Raipur was part of the Central Provinces & Berar and developed as an administrative and trade center.

Raipur is abundantly rich in mineral resources. It is among the biggest markets of steel and iron in the country. There are about 200 steel rolling mills, 195 sponge iron plants, at least 6 steel plants, 60 plywood factories, 35 ferro-alloy plants and 500 agro-industries. Raipur has over 800 rice milling plants.
