Mar: रायगड rāyagaḍa

 ‘King’s Fort’  [Rairi]  Fort/District, Maharashtra

From Mar: rāya, ‘king’; and Mar:  aḍa, ‘fort’.

Raigad fort was the capital of the Maratha Empire under Shivaji, the Maratha leader.

The district was originally called Kolaba and was renamed in 1981. The fort itself is in the district’s forest interior on the edge of the Western Ghats.
