From Sin: potukola or potupan, ‘reed, rush’ [Scleria oryzoides]; and vila, ‘pond, lake, marsh’.
This coarse reed is used for mat-weaving.
The Pottuvil Lagoon is a complex of wetlands, mangrove swamps and waterways hosting an amazing range of birds and wildlife including elephants, crocodiles, monitor lizards, sea eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, and herons.
