Polgahawela is an important railway junction that joins the Main Line (Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Nawalapitiya and Badulla) and the Northern Line (Anuradhapura, Jaffna, and Kankesanturai).
Polgahawela Buddhist Monastery is home to 100 monks and is the centre of an organization with 40 branches across the world founded by Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero.
