Sin: පින්නවල pinnavala -பின்னவலை piṉṉavalai
‘Hill Glory Bower Wood’ SBP, Sri Lanka
From Sin: pinna, ‘hill glory bower’ [Clerodendron infortunatum].
The pinna is a small flowering shrub or small tree; the Latin name refers to its sad, ugly leaves.
It is famous for its medicinal properties and is used widely in Ayurvedic and Siddha remedies for diarrhoea, liver disorders, headache, malaria, scabies, skin diseases, sores, scorpion sting, snake bite, and tumours.
Pinnawala is rather more famous for its elephant orphanage, breeding ground and nursery which accommodates around 100 elephants.
