Noida was established on April 17, 1976, as part of an urbanization and industrialization initiative by the Uttar Pradesh government. It was developed under the leadership of Sanjay Gandhi during the Emergency period (1975–77) to decongest Delhi and promote planned industrial growth in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The name Noida derives from the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority, reflecting its origins as a satellite city of Delhi. The term Okhla itself is older, possibly derived from a local canal headworks (nallah) on the Yamuna.
Today, Noida is a major IT and business hub, home to multinational corporations, media houses, and educational institutions. With modern infrastructure, extensive expressways, and a growing metro network, it has become one of India’s most developed urban centers. The city is also known for its high-rise residential complexes, shopping malls, and the film and television industry based in Film City.
