Paddy Fields’      Town, Tamil Nadu

From Tam: nel , ‘paddy’; vēli,  ‘field’, ‘enclosure’, ‘land’

At one time rice dominated the local economy, but since the 1960s lignite and thermal power stations have taken over: Neyveli has estimated lignite reserves of 3,300,000,000 tonnes.

The Neyveli Lignite Corporation is a public sector fossil fuel and thermal power corporation. It mines 30m tonnes of lignite from opencast mines here and in Rajasthan to generate electricity in its thermal power plants.
