‘Narasimha’s City’ [Chhotra Gadarwara] City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From Narasimha and Skt: pur, ‘fort’, ‘village’, ‘city’.
Originally called Chhotra Gadarwara [‘Little Shepherds’ Village’ from Hin: chhotra, ‘small’; and gadar, ‘shepherd’], it was named Narasimhapur after a temple was built dedicated to the man-lion avatar of Vishnu.
The modern city’s economy revolves around processing forest products such as sal, saaj, teak, and bamboo; as well as mangoes, herbs, tobacco and gum.
Narsinghpur is an important railway junction on the Jabalpur-Itarsi main line.
