The city was originally named after the 1,300 km Narmada/Narbada river which flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
The name Hoshangabad refers to Hoshang Shah Gori, the first ruler of Malwa Sultanate (1406–1435)
Sethani ghat in Narmadpur is one of India’s largest. It was built in the 19th century by Jankibai Sethani and is the site of the annual Narmada Jayanti festival.
