From Mal: mūnnu, ‘three’; āṟu/āṟṟu, ‘river’; and puḻa/puzha, ‘river’.
The Muvattupuzha river flows through the town.
It is the sacred Triveni Sangam (3-way confluence) of three rivers: Kothamangalam/Kothayaar, Kaliyar and Thodupuzhayar. Bathing at a confluence such as this will wash away sins.
