Mar: मुरुड muruḍa
‘Morod Island’ Fort, Maharashtra
From Kon: morod, ‘upland’; and Urd/Per: jazī’rah, ‘island’.
The sea fort at Murud-Janjira is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on all sides and can only be reached by boat.
It has 22 huge bastions with high granite walls and ramparts. The (Abyssinian) Siddis who controlled the fort successfully defended it against all-comers (the Portuguese, Mughals, Marathas and British).
Murud is a village on the shore opposite the fort.
