From Hin: mōtī, ‘pearl’;  hāra ‘garland’, ‘necklace’

The town was named after the Moti Jheel  [Hin: jhīla, ‘lake’], a horsehoe-shaped lake which divides the town into two. and looks like a necklace.

George Orwell, writer of ‘Homage to Catalonia’, ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’. was born here in 1903.
