From Skt: modaḥ ‘delight’, ‘pleasure’, ‘joy’; and Skt: pura→ara, ‘fort’, ‘city’.
This extraordinary 11thC Sun Temple (one of only two in India) was built in such a way that on the days of the spring (March 21st) and autumn (September 21st) equinoxes the sun’s first rays of sun fall Sun idol in the inner sanctum (garbhagriha).
