Mattanur is famous for its percussion: the chenda, a loud two-sided cylindrical drum which features in temple ceremonies, festivals, and dance dramas; and Panchavadya Sangham, a percussion ensemble featuring four percussion instruments (timila, maddalam, ilathalam and idakka) and a horn (kombu).
