Mar: māthā, ‘crown’, ‘crest (of a hill); Mar/Skt: araṇa/araṇya, ‘forest’

Matheran is a car-free hill station, 80km west of  Mumbai.  It was founded by the British in the mid-19thC.

The Matheran toy train ferries visitors 800m up into the Western Ghats.
