Tam: மாங்குளம் māṅkuḷam – Sin: මන්කුලම mankulama
‘Deer Tank’ NP, Sri Lanka
From Tam: māṉ, ‘deer’; and kulam,’pond, tank, reservoir’.
The Sri Lankan axis deer (Axis axis ceylonensis) or Ceylon spotted deer has traditionally inhabited lowland dry forests, savannas, and shrublands in Sri Lanka.
It is now considered under threat as a result of human encroachment and deforestation.
These deer would have been common in this area and are the same deer you can see on the streets of Trincomalee.
