The name combines two elements: man(d) and dasapura. The ‘mand’ may be a village or settlement with the generic Sanskrit name for a dwelling place. The dasapura indicates a collection of ten villages or settlements.
The Pashupatinath Temple at Mandsaur, dating back to the 6th century, houses an eight-faced Shiva linga. It is an important pilgrimage cente for Shaivites.
