From Sin: mādan, ‘Malabar plum’ [Syzygium cumini]; and pe, ‘wood, grove’.
The maadan/maadam is also known as the Malabar, Java, Portuguese, black or damson plum.
Although its fruit, leaves and wood have their uses, it is often grown for its shade and beauty attaining heights of 30m and the ripe old age of one hundred.
