Kon: लौतोलिम lautolim
‘Sedge Grass Lake’ – Village
From Kon: lovo/loyo, ‘sedge grass’; and Kon: tollem, ‘lake’, ‘pond’.
Sedge is a relative of grass but has a triangular stem and and spiral display, rather than a cyndrical stem with alternately arranged leaves.
Another suggestion is that name comes from Mar: lōṭa m. [Skt: loṭana] ‘(strong) current’; ‘moving water’; and Kan: halli/valli →oli, ‘village’.
Loutolim is on the banks of the Zuari, a 92 km tidal river which floods annually.
