Kulgam is situated on the Vishaw river in the foothills of the Pir Panjal range.
It is surrounded by mountains, lush greenery, and rivers. It is also famous for its apple orchards, earning it the nickname Land of Apples.
Kulgam has historical and religious significance, with ancient temples and shrines reflecting the region’s diverse cultural heritage.The Kulvageshwari Shrine, dedicated to Saraswati, has even been suggested as a possible origin for its name.
In 2006 it was the site of the Kulgam massacre where nine Nepali and Bihari labourers were shot and an newly recruited Indian Army soldier was tortured and beheaded.
