Korba is a major industrial city and district in northern Chhattisgarh. It is known for its vast coal reserves, power plants, and its significant tribal population. The region is home to several indigenous groups, including the Korwa, Gond, and Baiga communities, who have lived here for centuries.
The name Korba is derived from the Korwa (or Koro) tribe, a Scheduled Tribe of central India. Tribals are the main inhabitants of this area are tribals, constituting nearly 52% of the local population.The main tribal population in Korba district is the Pahadi Korwa.
The exact linguistic origin of Korwa is uncertain, but it may come from a Dravidian or Munda root [possibly Dra: kor(u)/korr(u), ‘hen’, ‘cock. ‘fowl’].
The Korwas traditionally practise shifting cultivation and lived in forested areas, which remain a defining feature of the region.
Historically, Korba was part of the princely state of Chhota Nagpur, ruled by local chieftains before coming under British control.
With the discovery of rich coal deposits in the 20th century, it transformed into one of India’s key power generation hubs, supplying electricity to multiple states. Korba is nicknamed thr Power Capital of Chhattisgarh.
The presence of the Hasdeo River has further shaped its geography and economy, supporting both industry and agriculture.
Despite industrialization, Korba retains a strong tribal heritage, with festivals, dances, and customs that reflect its indigenous roots.
