Kolonnawa is a suburb of Colombo and, like its parent city, its name probably derives from the Kelani Ganga: kolon is a corruption of kelani.
Kolonnawa is part of the flood plain of Kelani river: 70% of the land is below sea level and is dependent on bunds for flood protection – which is not always effective!
