From Kharga Malla and Skt: pur, ‘city’
Kharga Malla, a 9thC king of the Mallabhum dynasty of Bishnupur, conquered this city/region and named it after himself. Kharagpur is West Bengal’s fourth largest city and hosts what was India’s first IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) (IIT).
Railways are important at Kharagpur: it has one of the largest railway workshops in India and the third longest railway platform in the world (1072.5 m).
