Mal: കൽപറ്റ kalpaṟṟa
‘Rocky Place’ [Kalpaṟṟa] Town, Kerala
From Mal: kal, kallu ‘stone’, ‘rock’; and Tam: paṟṟam, ‘collection’, ‘mass’.
Kalpetta is circled by mountains, rocks, waterfalls and terraces of spice, coffee and tea.
It is in an ideal setting for trekking in the Wayanad region, including Chembra Peak, the Neelimala Hills and the Edakkal Caves.
The English transliteration suggests Mal: pēṭṭai, ‘village’, ‘suburb’, ‘market’ but the original Malayalam has other ideas.
