Mal:കളമശ്ശേരി kaḷamaśśēri
‘Rice Settlement’ Suburb/Region (Kochi), Kerala
From Mal: kaḷama, ‘(a kind of) rice growing in deep water’; and Tam/Mal: c(h)ēri/ś(h)ēri, ‘town’, ‘village’, ‘settlement’.
This implies a rice growing region, although elephants associated with the Thrikkakara Temple [kaḷabham, ‘(young) elephant’] are also a possibility.
The modern town is an industrial suburb of Kochi specialising in fertilisers, chemicals, machine tools and automotive servicing.
