From Skt: kr̥ṣṇa (‘black’) → local kai; and mūr, ‘hill’ or ‘range’.
The Kaimur Hills form the easternmost extension of the Vindhya range, marking Bihar’s rugged southwestern edge.
Rich in forests and waterfalls, they shelter prehistoric rock paintings at sites like Lehda and Kauva Dol, showing hunting scenes dating back thousands of years.
The plateau was also a frontier zone in medieval times, guarding approaches between Bihar and central India.
