From Skt: kavi, ‘poet’, ‘sage’; sūrya, ‘sun’;  and nagar, ‘city’.

Kavisurya Baladeva Ratha (c. 1789 – 1845) was an 18-19thC Odia/Sanskrit poet , composer, musician and literary scholar.

Kabisuryanagar or Kavisuryanagar, abbreviated to  K.S.N, was originally called Boirani.

It has become a centre for Odissi following Kavisurya Baladeva Ratha’s initiatives to promoye and develop it.
