Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (1839-1904) founded the city, the industrial capital of Jharkand, on the site of a village called Sakchi. Lord Chelmsford re-named the city in his honour in 1919.
J.N. Tata had built his Iron and Steel Works here using local coal and iron ore deposits, and imported technology from Pittsburgh steelmakers. The city is also known as the ‘Steel City’ or ‘Tatanagar’.
