‘(Place with) Olives’  City/District, West Bengal

From Ben:  jalapāi, ‘olive’; (Ben)/Dra: guri, ‘place’.

Guri is a place-name element found in the northern region of West Bengal [Siliguri, Mallaguri, Maynaguri] which many think has a Dravidian origin – it is usually translated as ‘place’.

Olive trees grow profusely here, especially in districts like Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar.
